The New St. Gédéon de Beauce Municipal Garage, Erected by Murox®, Boasts Energy Savings of 60% |

(ST. GÉDÉON DE BEAUCE, QC) – Murox®, a business unit of Canam Group (TSX: CAM), has enabled the municipality of St. Gédéon de Beauce to demonstrate a real commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable development, thanks to the ventilated thermal wall (VTPTM) incorporated into the design of the municipality’s new facility. This product was developed by Murox® as part of its research and development program on energy-efficient buildings.
At the inauguration of the new St. Gédéon de Beauce municipal garage, Murox® president Pierre Arcand said that energy bills will be cut 60% by a combination of VTPTM wall panels, a high performance lighting system and a geothermal system for heating.
“Over the last few years, Murox® has concentrated its efforts on developing a high performance building envelope,” he added. “Today, Murox® is the only prefabricated building manufacturer in North America to offer an integrated, energy-efficient solution. Our goal is to support companies and municipalities in improving their environmental record, while at the same time helping to boost their performance.”
Murox® ventilated thermal panels, placed on the building’s south-facing facade, capture solar energy to preheat outside air that is subsequently used to heat the building. This reduces the building’s heating bill by 25%. The new municipal garage’s VTPTM wall captures enough energy to heat the 558-square-metre (6,006 sq. ft.) building during the fall and spring months.
Besides energy savings, the VTPTM wall provides other significant benefits. With virtually the same thickness as a basic Murox® load-bearing panel, ventilated thermal panels blend perfectly with the rest of the building. The fact that the VTPTM wall is entirely shop-assembled allows for rapid and efficient on-site erection.
“We’re impressed by the thermal wall’s performance,” said St. Gédéon de Beauce mayor Éric Lachance. “We started using the heating system on a continuous basis in November. Up until then, the solar captor supplied us with enough hot air to heat the whole garage. And now, since April to be exact, we feel no need to use the heating system on sunny days.”
An integrated solution
The VTPTM wall is one of the components of the integrated solution that Murox® markets under the MuroxEnergyTM brand name. This solution offers a simplified and cost-effective approach to designing and manufacturing new, highly energy-efficient buildings. It is custom-designed and allows the building owner to achieve significant energy cost savings for heating, air conditioning and lighting.
The MuroxEnergyTM solution was used in the design and construction of the new Stageline Group building in L’Assomption, located in the Lanaudière region of Quebec. Inaugurated in the fall of 2008, this building consumes 69.2% less energy than a similar building that meets the standards of the National Energy Code for Buildings, without directly emitting any greenhouse gases, making it the most energy-efficient industrial building in Quebec.
Ecological footprint
Through its partnership with the municipality and in a spirit of sustainable development, Murox® will assess St. Gédéon de Beauce’s ecological footprint in order to develop an action plan aimed at further improving the municipality’s environmental record.
