Structal Secures a CAN$30 M Contract for the Construction of Red Bull Park, the New Home of the New York Red Bulls
|(POINT OF ROCKS, MD) – Structal-Heavy Steel Construction (“Structal”) of Point of Rocks, Maryland, a business unit of Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM.A), has secured a contract from Hunter Roberts Construction Group, LLC for the design-assist, fabrication and erection of Red Bull Park, the new home of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS). The contract awarded to Structal for Red Bull Park, which is currently under construction in Harrison, New Jersey, is worth between $28 and $30 million Canadian.|
“This is the fourth stadium Structal has built in the Greater New York City Area in the last 18 months and, if we look at the bigger picture, one of the 25 sports facilities in North America Structal has been associated with over the last 10 years,” said Luc Pelland, President of Structal-Heavy Steel Construction. “Our commitment to customer satisfaction is clearly the key to our success.”
“We’re delighted to have won this contract, which we did on the strength of our experience in the construction of complex, large-scale projects and our expertise in terms of engineering support and connection design engineering,” added Charlie Watson, President of the U.S. division of Structal-Heavy Steel Construction.
The striking design for Red Bull Park requires 54 large, tapered, bent trusses of varying depths to form the roof, a curving structure that will wrap around the entire stadium in a metal shell, shielding all the seats from the elements, while leaving the soccer field uncovered. The trusses, approximately 25 feet (7.6 m) at the deepest point, will extend out 165 feet (50.3 m) towards the field to form the canopy roof.
Fabrication of the structural steel components will begin during the second quarter of 2008 at Canam Group’s St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC, and Point of Rocks, MD, plants. The erection work is scheduled to begin in June and to be completed in early 2009. The new 25,000-seat facility is slated to open in 2009.
